Divine Child esports support Beaumont Children’s through Extra Life

Goodness in Gaming

For the third year running, Divine Child High School esports will be raising funds and awareness for Beaumont Children’s. The esports team participates in a fundraising program called Extra Life, an annual 24-hour gaming marathon that will take place on November 7th, 2020. Participants sign up, pledge to play games in honor of pediatric patients treated at their local CMN Hospital while asking friends and family to donate to their efforts.

Since 2018, the Divine Child esports team has raised $8,836! 100% of these funds support pediatric programs and services at Beaumont Children’s. Donations like these enhance and help provide state-of-the-art care that is close to home to over 200,000 families who enter Beaumont Children’s each year.

Matt Mooney, Assistant Principal, has lead the team in their team efforts since they started participating in 2018. He comments, “Extra Life is more than an excuse to play video games. It’s a chance to take basic human experiences- the joy of play, the value of life, and the triumph of the human spirit – and to share them with others. Participating in Extra Life has forced me to move out of my comfort zone and address community issues directly. The money that is donated via the Extra Life charity goes directly to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and that money is spent on life-saving procedures and equipment that will directly affect children in our community. Asking people for money is a fundamentally awkward thing for many of us to do, but I have found it incredibly easy to reach out to friends, family, and the general public to ask for support in helping sick and injured children.”

This year has presented challenges, obstacles and change for all of us. Matt says, “2020 has been a year of challenge and uncertainty, but it has also been a year of transformation. I believe that participating in Extra Life this year will not only help to entertain our viewers on Twitch and other platforms, but it will also provide us with a much needed call to community in a time when traditional forms of shared enjoyment simply aren’t possible.”
